Prabhavi Public Library
Prabhavi Public Library is the biggest community participated project ever experienced by the Gal-oya community. Inaugurated on 18th March 2005, Prabhavi public library is the ultimate results of the incredible dedication of the members. The abandoned building at the Weranketagoda junction was repaired by the participation of villagers. One brought bricks, one brought cement, tools, and they started work without any money in hand. One of the other group went to the woods, brought a log, made plies and then the shelves and the tables for the library. The other group started the fundraising campaign from nearby bicycle repair shop and continued. Some farmers didn’t have any money or paddy at all. But they wanted to give some thing. “I will give you two bushels of paddy after harvesting” they promised the fundraisers. The last group of Prabhavi started practicing for the fundraising cultural show. Posters were pasted, banners were hanged. Prabhavi’s “Ranga Prabhavi” Cultural show was advertised.
All the money went to Colombo, asked for more discounts from book stores, and brought book even for the discounts. Some people looked at the incident and were pleased, donating money and books without any hesetation.
The Prabhavi Public Library was inaugurated, school children, elders, parents, brothers sisters, grand parents all are gathered to find a drink for their book thirst. This is how one of the village dreams flourished. You can see the bloomed flower at the heart of the Village Weranketagoda.
Now the library contains approximately 1200 books, periodical and newspapers. But lots of readers are waiting for more books. Why? Because they have already finished the existing books. They know Dostoyevsky, Chekhov, and Marks but still want to know more. We work hard and are hard working. Our librarian is working 6 days a week voluntarily. Here we are proving our dedication. Now this is the time for you to think about us…
